Fresh Food. Best Price. NYC Gem.

For all of you Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s regulars out there, I have a small request. Try a new place…even if it’s only for one day! You’ll surprise yourself with a fun new experience. Next Thursday or Friday, I dare you to grab a cup of iced coffee from The Grey Dog on University Place, and walk around Union Square Greenmarket. You will be amazed.

The cheap prices of fruits and vegetables along with the friendly faces of people who come into the city from various farms and nurseries around the state will quickly win you over. All of which have a passion for growing the freshest, finest, and most delicious foods they can offer to you. At the best price.

Walk slowly. Breath in all of the eclectic aromas. Enjoy the moment. It’s summertime. Surround yourself with good friends, yummy flavors, and create a menu to perfectly complement one food you fell in love with while you were there.

My recent crush at the farmer’s market? That would be blueberries. They were so incredibly ripe and lush. Perfect to make this showstopper 4th of July pie {recipe from one of my mom’s best friends below – it’s delish!}.

Best Blueberry Pie:

3 ½ c. blueberries

2 T. fresh orange juice

1 t. fresh lemon juice

½  t. nutmeg [I grate fresh]

½  t. cinnamon

1 1/3 c. sugar

1/3 c. cornstarch

In a large saucepan …put all ingredients…stir… simmer on low until turns clear and thickens.

Remove from heat.

Add:

½ t. vanilla

½ t. almond extract

Pour into a pie shell…dot with up to 3 T. Butter.   Cut a star(s) into the top crust…Seal edges.  (I use Pillsbury refrigerated rolled up pie crusts)

Cook on a baking sheet under to catch drips

Bake at 450* for 10 minutes and then  reduce to 350* for 35 minutes.

Like seasons, the foods change…blackberries are out of season and blueberries are now in! You will constantly be falling in love with unique produce. New foods, new menus to be created. Innovative. Thanks to Union Square Greenmarket.
