A Southern Caramel Cake

No one can resist a dense, buttery, not to mention a rich creamy cake. Whether it’s at a wedding, birthday, or any champagne cheers, I grew up celebrating life events on cake from the most fabulous baker in Nashville: Leland Riggan’s Dessert Designs.

This bakery has been Nashville’s go-to bakery for at least 25 years (Leland made my Christening cake!) and catering to everyone from birthday babies to celebrities to gift-givers by mail. Their signature butter meringue icing with spectacular hand-crafted sugar flowers is a dead giveaway that it’s an elegant Dessert Design’s cake. The cakes are all just as delicious as they are beautiful. My favorite birthday cake is beyond decadent…a dense chocolate truffle cake base with homemade caramel icing filling, topped with a layer sour cream pound cake and then iced with the butter meringue icing. Just thinking about my last one being decorated with huge sugar peonies & hydrangeas makes me swoon!

Lost about an easy gift? One of my favorite “icings on the cake” after completing an internship or a quick thinking of you present is to call up Dessert Designs. They will overnight their famous Southern Caramel Cake anywhere in the country.

This is a knockout gift to anyone, especially if they’re not from the deep South. It’s a homemade sour cream pound cake covered in slow-cooked caramel icing that tastes of a salt /sugar blend after each bite. {No self-respecting Southerner would ever put powdered sugar in caramel icing…the real deal starts with caramelizing sugar in an iron skillet and is finished on top of the stove}  If you’ve seen “The Help”, this is as close as you’re going to get to Minnie’s Caramel Cake!

Southern Caramel Cakes are a home run purchase, whether it’s for you, a significant other, or a great boss. Très irresistible!
