One Gig at a Time

It’s that time of year. Cramming for exams. Finishing up last minute work before the holidays. Trying to find the perfect holiday gifts for your friends and family. Or my personal favorite? Trying to catch your train at Grand Central!

It’s all stressful…which is ironic since it’s one of the most beautiful times of the year!

But my view on how much I was letting the little things {like barely missing a train} changed when I attended Google’s Nonprofit Holiday Mixer event this week.

With over 60 partner organizations in attendance, it was a reason to celebrate!

The Nick Hempton Band

Google hosted this event to introduce different nonprofit organizations in NYC to each other, and to celebrate not only the holidays but the fact that all of these people are the ones who are truly helping others. One organization that stood out {after being amazed by the band playing that night} was Music For Tomorrow.

When Katrina hit New Orleans, a ton of jazz musicians lost their jobs. After this devastation, Music For Tomorrow was launched in 2006 {and founded by Brent Reidy and Jude Law} as an effort to help displaced jazz musicians raise awareness about jazz music through performance opportunities. Today, Music For Tomorrow’s online band booking service provides these performance opportunities while connecting jazz musicians with audiences.

Through an easy to use site, Music For Tomorrow allows you to select the date you wish to have a musician / band, how much you’re willing to spend / donate and how long you wish for them to play.

Whether it be at a cocktail party, office party or a nice dinner party at your apartment, Music For Tomorrow is there to help coordinate.

With Nick Hempton

The jazz musicians playing at this event were phenomenal! It amazed me that without the help from Music For Tomorrow, Google would have never found this rare talent to play that night.

This is the time of the year to remember to give back, and to stop focusing on the little things that stress you out like the train you missed last night. It’s all about having a kind heart and helping others who need support that matters! Nonprofits like Music for Tomorrow are on it. Music For Tomorrow: “New Orleans gave the world jazz. Now we are giving back. One gig at a time.”
